The Importance of Passion in Entrepreneurship

As I was interviewing Aaron Fulkerson, co-founder and CEO of MindTouch and my latest guest on the YII Entrepreneur Podcast, I realized that all of the successful entrepreneurs I had interviewed over the last few months share one (obvious) trait: a deep passion for their business.  This passion is essential for two reasons:

  1. First, you need to convince others to buy into your idea and if you’re not excited about what you’re selling, it will be difficult for them to get excited, too.
  2. Second, building a venture is an all-consuming task.  As Aaron mentioned in his final words of advice, the reason his company is so successful is because of a huge amount of hard work.  If you are not passionate about your idea or company, it will be difficult to maintain your stamina for long periods of time.

In another podcast, Susan and Eric Koger of ModCloth describe how they maxed out their credit cards to purchase inventory for the Holiday season.  In 2009, ModCloth’s revenues reached $15M.
